Yamaha RX 100 Relaunching Soon in 2025

Yamaha RX 100

In a move that has stirred excitement among motorcycle enthusiasts across India, Yamaha has officially announced the much-anticipated relaunch of its legendary RX 100 in early 2025.

The Iconic Yamaha RX 100 Makes a Comeback

Originally introduced in 1985, the Yamaha RX 100 quickly gained immense popularity, becoming more than just a mode of transportation. Its lightweight design, exceptional acceleration, and signature two-stroke engine sound made it a cultural phenomenon in the 1990s.

Rajesh Menon, a 43-year-old software engineer from Bangalore, fondly recalls, “I still remember the day my father brought home our RX 100. The entire neighborhood came to admire it. That bike was more than just a vehicle; it was a symbol of aspiration. My son has grown up hearing stories about it.”

This emotional and nostalgic connection has played a crucial role in Yamaha’s decision to reintroduce the RX 100, catering to both past owners and a new generation of riders.

Engineering the RX 100 for the Modern Era

One of the biggest challenges for Yamaha has been adapting the RX 100’s classic two-stroke engine to comply with India’s stringent BS6 emission norms. Engineers at Yamaha’s R&D facility in Surajpur have reportedly tackled this issue by integrating modern direct injection technology, electronic engine management, and catalytic conversion systems.

Dr. Arjun Nair, a professor of mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi, commented, “Traditional two-stroke engines produce higher emissions due to their design. However, Yamaha’s innovative approach has allowed them to retain the bike’s core performance characteristics while significantly reducing emissions.”

Early reports suggest that the revamped RX 100 will feature a slightly increased displacement of 110cc while maintaining its original 11-horsepower output. Motorcycle journalists who have had early access to the prototype claim that the bike retains its iconic torque curve and throttle response while reducing emissions by approximately 85%.

Classic Aesthetics with Modern Enhancements

Yamaha has ensured that the new RX 100 stays true to its original design, with only necessary modifications to meet contemporary standards. The motorcycle will feature:

  • The signature teardrop fuel tank
  • A flat seat profile
  • Minimalist instrumentation
  • LED lighting elements
  • Disc brakes for improved safety
  • Ergonomic enhancements for better rider comfort

“Our goal was to preserve the essence of the RX 100 while making minimal yet essential modern improvements,” stated Eishin Chihana, Chairman of Yamaha Motor India.

The frame has also been upgraded to high-tensile steel for increased durability, while the use of modern alloys in the wheels and swingarms reduces overall weight, enhancing handling and ride quality.

Market Positioning and Availability

The relaunched RX 100 is expected to be positioned as a premium offering within Yamaha’s lineup. While standard commuter motorcycles in India are priced between ₹70,000-90,000, the new RX 100 is likely to carry a price tag of approximately ₹1.5 lakh (around $1,800), reflecting its exclusivity and advanced engineering.

Yamaha has planned an initial production run of 7,500 units, with deliveries commencing in February 2025. Notably, the company has introduced a priority allocation system, giving original RX 100 owners first access to the new model.

Motorcycle historian Sidharth Krishnan emphasized, “The RX 100 is more than just a bike—it represents an era of economic and cultural transformation in India. The relaunch is a tribute to its historical significance while ensuring its legacy continues for future generations.”

Pre-launch events are scheduled across major Indian cities starting in November 2024, allowing prospective buyers to experience the new RX 100 firsthand and make reservations at authorized dealerships.

With the return of this legendary motorcycle, Yamaha aims to bridge nostalgia with modern innovation, ensuring that the RX 100 continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Indian riders.
